Your first triathlon: the plan to finish your super sprint with confidence

400 m swim, 10 km bike, 2.5 km run: the super sprint is the gateway to triathlon. You don't need to be an accomplished swimmer, cyclist and runner: you need to link all three without going into the red. You give your race date and your slots in each discipline: Trainetic lays out the weeks.

Five rules for a first triathlon

They come from the advice of the French Triathlon Federation (FFTRI) and from published beginner plans. Your plan applies them.

What your plan sets for a super sprint (XS)

The Trainetic engine settings for this format. Everything else — durations, paces, volume — is calculated from your level and the slots you give it.

BenchmarkIn your plan
Minimum slotsOne swim session, one bike session and one run session per week
Long rideNo dedicated long ride: over 10 km, the bike leg stays short
Long runUp to 35 minutes, from three run sessions a week
Run off the bike (brick)Up to 20 minutes, with the bike-to-run transition rehearsed
TaperTwo weeks, volume down and intensity maintained

Your race comes the day after your last session: the day before, a short shake-out session in each discipline.

The sessions of a first triathlon

Each discipline has its own, spread across your slots without ever placing two hard sessions on the same day.

Swimming, in meters

Technique drills to swim more easily, then sets measured in meters with rest at the wall. Distances adjust to the length of your pool.

Bike and run, at easy pace

Easy rides and runs to build your base, and a few harder efforts as the date gets closer.

The brick session

Bike then run, no break, with a timed transition. It's the session that feels most like your race, and the one that builds the most confidence.

What if I can only swim breaststroke?

Breaststroke is allowed in triathlon, and many beginners swim their first super sprint that way. What matters is being comfortable in the water over the whole distance. If you can't yet swim 200 m in one go, a few sessions with a club will save you more time than a plan.

Questions people ask before a first triathlon

How many weeks to prepare for a first triathlon?
For a super sprint, five to eight weeks are often enough for someone who already does a little of one of the three disciplines. Starting from scratch, allow two to three months instead. Your plan is built around your race date.
Can you prepare for a triathlon starting from zero?
Yes, as long as you can swim. If you don't run at all, start with the beginner running plan: triathlon will come next, on a solid base.
Do I need to swim front crawl?
No. Breaststroke is allowed, and many first triathlons are swum that way. Front crawl becomes useful as distances get longer.
How many sessions a week?
Three at least, one per discipline. Four to six let you progress faster and add a brick session. Your plan fills the slots you give it, and tells you if any are missing.
Do I need a license or a medical certificate?
For a single race, the FFTRI offers a Licence Expérience, taken out when you register with the organizer. The medical certificate is replaced by a health questionnaire. Check the conditions for your race.
Is a wetsuit mandatory?
It depends on the water temperature, measured on race day: FFTRI rules make it mandatory below 16 °C and ban it in warm water, above about 24.5 °C. The exact thresholds are set out in the current rules and announced by the organizer: check them before you register.
Super sprint or sprint to start?
The super sprint is made for discovering the sport. If you already practice one of the three disciplines regularly, a sprint is within your reach: see the sprint plan.
Is it free?
Yes, for the essentials: creating your triathlon plan, taking it with you as a PDF and tracking your sessions. A subscription exists for advanced features, like the written analysis of each session. The plan itself doesn't need it.
